Heritage Building & Tours

What is the history of The Henry Jones Art Hotel buildings?

The hotel occupies a row of historic waterfront warehouses with origins from 1804. The site later became the IXL Jam Factory established by Sir Henry Jones in the late 1800s. Over time the buildings housed barracks, boarding houses and slums before their transformation into Australia’s first dedicated art hotel in 2004.

Why is the hotel’s architecture historically significant?

The property forms part of a rare collection of early colonial and Victorian industrial buildings. Original sandstone, arched warehouse entries and Georgian windows have been preserved and sensitively integrated with contemporary design.

Does the hotel offer guided art and heritage tours?

Yes. Guided tours explore the art collection and the site’s history, including the transformation from the IXL Jam Factory to today’s art hotel.

How do I book the Henry Jones Art Tour?

Can non-guests join the hotel’s art and history tours?
