GUYANGALAL UMBARRA South ‘Belonging’ black duck

I belong to one of the largest Aboriginal families on the south-east cost of NSW. The Yuin people. we are sea dwellers like our ancestors before us, and our life revolves around the ocean, hunting and gathering seaafood… I am inspired by all that surrounds me in the landscape, the colours, the patterns, the smell and the stories passed down from my elders.
The triangle that features in my art represents who I am and where I see myself amongst the landscape. Using line work in our art is our Yuin cultural way.
Moving to Tasmania was motivated by a desire to connect to a place where I can dive into nature and absorb the land and its offerings. Here I will learn about the Tasmanian aboriginal people’s culture as I am living off country. Respect and understanding of another’s country is integral.
